Bear Cashed in their token early, trading their coveted No. 1 pick for No. 9, No. 61, first and second round picks in the 2024 and 2025 drafts, respectively, and DJ Moore to the Carolina Panthers.

Rather than bet on future prospects, the Bears traded for a proven prospect in Moore. He recorded three straight 1,000-yard seasons between 2019-21 with shoddy quarterback play. In Moore, the Bears bring in the No. 1 pass-catching option to pair with Darnell Mooney, Chase Claypool and Cole Kemet.
Had the Bears gone with the Raiders and settled on a reasonable trade, they would have relied more on their ability to draft a team than on making an immediate move. The Bears potentially gave up rebuilding time by trading away players, not choosing to.
In addition, by trading the pick early, the Bears also traded compensation value for time. It is even more likely that the Bears would have received higher compensation if they had waited until closer to draft day to trade the pick. Still, he exchanged it well before draft day.
In doing so, the Bears scratched “elite pass catcher” off their laundry list and gave themselves time to sketch a new off-season plan for free agency and the draft. And they took advantage of the scheme by letting the market come to them.
